One of the most important discoveries of air ion research is probably the direct influence on the autonomic nervous system, the vegetativum.

The vegetative nervous system ensures that the human being breathes and that the heart beats. It controls the many life processes that take place automatically. One of the most important neurohormones in this system is serotonin. It can be found almost everywhere in the body. An increased release of this hormone can result in pain, cramps, discomfort, irritability, sleep disorders and anxiety.

At the University of California and in Russian research laboratories, the direct influence of positive and negative air ions on the neurohormone serotonin in the blood and brain has been clearly and significantly proven.

Positive air ions lead to an increased release of serotonin; negative air ions, however, activate serotonin-degrading enzymes. If the air ion content in the air we breathe is low, serotonin accumulation predominates. A persistent lack of negative air ions inevitably leads to changes in the behavior of the individual:

The sleep behavior, which is directly dependent on the content of brain amines, is disturbed. Restless sleep, insomnia and irritability can be the result of an excess of serotonin. Long-lasting imbalance between serotonin and its degrading enzyme (MAO) can lead to the condition known as vegetative dystonia (movement disorders of all kinds). It was unanimously found that characteristics such as aggressiveness, intolerance, feelings of listlessness are triggered by serotonin triggers, including positive air ions.

The effect of negative air ions can be summarized as follows:

They convey a general feeling of well-being and reduce restlessness and pain caused by excess serotonin. They regulate sleep behavior and usually bring deep sleep by their influence on the REM sleep period. Performance, both mental and physical, is stimulated. The influence on the blood chemistry for the accumulation of antibodies against infections, the turnover of vitamins C, B1, B2 and B3 is demonstrably improved. Cell respiration is activated.

In practice, experiments in many school classes have shown that the willingness to learn and the receptiveness of the presented teaching material is considerably improved.
